African Lions (Panthera Leo)

Lions with their thick, tawny fur layer, a tufted tail, and a heavy mane are Africa’s largest predators. The social creatures live with their families and move in herds with 3 males, 6-12 females, and lion cubs. Travellers can track lions through the Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Ruaha National Park.

02

African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana)

African elephants are the largest land mammals, different from their Asian cousins. African elephants are divided into two species: African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) and African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana). A female elephant leads the herds of females and calves. Male elephants move in small herds or individually. Tarangire National Park in Tanzania is the best place to spot elephants.

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)

The black rhinoceros is a large herbivore with two upright horns on the nasal bridge. Tanzania is home to the eastern black rhino. Along with other rhino species, the black rhino, one of the big five, is critically endangered. When luck is by your side, you can spot a black rhino in the Serengeti National Park or Ngorongoro Crater on your safari trip.

04

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus)

Leopards are shy big cats, making their view difficult for visitors on safari. The carnivore, covered in tawny fur with rosette markings or black fur, blends into the darkness of dense forests. After a successful night hunt, the wild creators move their prey to a tree in private to prevent scavengers and other animals. Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Ruaha are the best areas to spot the big cats.

African Buffalo (syncerus caffer)

African buffalo, also known as black or cape buffalo, are seen in large herds. The animal in the Big 5 is considered to be one of the most dangerous hunters. The timid look of the animal is deceptive. The African buffalo, also known as the Cape Buffalo, is immensely strong and aggressive. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are the best places to see the buffalo.

Plan your Big Five Safari in Tanzania

On your safari to Tanzania, you can see the Big 5 – Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, and Rhinoceros. Tanzania is home to diverse wildlife and dense, tropical forests. The best location in Tanzania to witness the Big 5 is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The selection of the Big 5 was based on the difficulties hunters face when hunting them. These five were popular among the hunters as trophies and achievements. Trophy hunters coined the term “Big Five” in the 1800’s. The opportunity to spot Big 5 in their natural habitat is a top attraction for safari goers in today’s time. You can shoot the Big 5 with a camera and take some of the most precious snaps of your life.
