History of Gombe National Park

In the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika, lies a place like no other: Gombe National Park-Where Science Met the Soul of the Wild. This conservation area was established in 1968, though its history is mostly associated with the groundbreaking research on primate inhabitants conducted by Dr Jane Goodall in the 1960s. Gombe National Park is the site of the world’s longest-running wild primate study, “Gombe Stream Research Centre”, which presented scientific evidence of chimpanzee behaviour and evolutionary links with humans.

What Makes Gombe National Park Unique?

Unlike many safari destinations, tourism at Gombe National Park is all about presence and observation. For almost half a century, following in Dr Jane Goodall’s footsteps, visitors have been tracking and observing chimpanzee behaviour in isolated groups across the park. Some of the most famous BBC and National Geographic films about chimpanzees and Dr Jane have been made in this region.

Gombe National Park teaches tourists about the value of slow travel, the essence of listening, looking, and understanding animals not as a spectacle but as fellow beings. Every corner of this safari park reminds tourists of a fearless 26-year-old woman who ventured into unexplored regions with unknown beings, only to make one of the greatest discoveries in science.

At Tanzania Adventures and Safaris, we’re proud to guide our travellers to this sacred place. Our team of local experts, trained guides, and seasoned storytellers assists tourists with chimpanzee trekking and other safari activities. Who knows, amongst you might be another great human to discover an unexplored aspect of wildlife soon?
