Rubondo National Park
History of Rubondo National Park
Rubondo National Park is a hidden gem offering an exclusive private oasis experience for safari travellers. It was established as a game reserve in 1965 and upgraded to a national park in 1977. Rubondo Island on Lake Victoria serves as a pioneering conservation ark. Before the 1960s, this island was mostly inhabited by the Zinza people, who were relocated to make way for the protected area. Currently, this island is known as a low-impact tourist destination, with eco-lodges and comfortable safari experiences.

What Makes Rubondo National Park Unique?
Rubondo Island National Park stands apart as one of Africa’s only island national parks, set on the vast waters of Lake Victoria. Its uniqueness lies in the seamless blend of forest, water, and wildlife, offering a safari experience unlike those in typical savannah landscapes. The park is home to a remarkable chimpanzee population, introduced as part of a conservation project, making it one of the few places in Tanzania where you can encounter these primates in the wild.
Rubondo also boasts rich biodiversity, including elephants, giraffes, hippos, and over 300 bird species thriving in its dense forests and papyrus swamps. With limited visitor access, it remains untouched and exclusive, perfect for travellers seeking solitude. Add to that boat safaris, catch-and-release fishing, and serene lakeside sunsets, and Rubondo delivers a rare, immersive escape into raw, unspoiled nature.

FAQ
Mainly, eco-lodges, tented camps, and fly-camping experiences are available in Rubondo National Park.
Yes, definitely. Rubondo Islands National Park is suitable for family travel and offers a cosy, adventurous vacation.
Chimpanzees in the Rubondo National Park differ from those of the Mahale and Gombe cousins, primarily because of their origin. They are not native to the population, but were introduced in the park during the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, the chimpanzee population has naturally increased, but it is not indigenous like those of the other two.
Swimming in Lake Victoria is not recommended due to the high risk of contracting Bilharzia (schistosomiasis), along with the presence of deadly crocodiles, hippos, and dangerous currents.
Rubondo National Park can be chosen over other safari destinations for its rare island setting and mix of land and water safari experiences.
